Description

The coastlines of the world are constantly being impacted by waves, currents and tides. Choose your favorite coastline (or least favorite) and describe how it is affected by those factors. How might these factors affect the coastline as sea level rises? You should include introductory information about how those processes are formed.

Impacts of Waves Currents and Tides on Coastlines
Waves, currents, and tides are three different natural phenomena that may seem similar
but differ in terms of their causes, frequency, and intensity among several other factors. Waves
are water movements occurring on the surfaces of water bodies due to forces exerted by winds.
Currents are movements of large masses of water from one place to another and in a specific
direction; caused by differences in temperature between surfaces of the ocean in different
regions. Tides are rise and fall movements of water over a long period of time caused by the
interaction of Earth's, moon's and Sun's gravitational forces (National Ocean Service, 2017). All
three, however, have major impacts on coastlines of the world.
Waves change as they move closer to land or rather shores. In the deep sea, waves only
affect the water surface, but as they move to the shallower ends, they begin to drag on the
bottom. As they approach the shallow ends, waves slow down due to friction between the ground
and water. The friction becomes a major determinant of the shape of shorelines. Waves cause
erosion on coastlines. They b...
