Minimum wage as a global social problem

Recent years have seen intense and more robust debates concerning minimum wage in
the American systems. Stakeholders from different sectors of the economy have been having
discussions with regards to the manner in which the different minimum wage laws, policies and
practices have been impacting the American people, especially with regards to their social and
economic positions in the societies. There are circumstances when then issue has resulted in
protests from workers, leading to reduced productivity in industries. For example, on September
14th 2014, there were protests across major American cities in which employees of fast food
establishments were involved in sit-ins and protests while demanding the minimum wage to be
increased to $15 per hour. There are a lot of arguments that have been put forward regarding the
issue. Seemingly, there are a lot of social and political aspects that must be considered to find
solutions to the problem. Like it happens in different States in America, regions across the world
have different regulations regarding the minimum wage. Besides, it is a fact that there are some
countries that do not have provisions of minimum wage in law and as a result leave the
employees to the mercy of their employers. In America, Washington is a shining light with
regards to minimum wage since it has a provision of $ 9.19 an hour. However, there are others
like Wyoming and Georgia that are still trailing far behind at $5.15 an hour. Globally, the costs
of living keep rising and it is necessary for governments to have provisions for minimum wage in
their systems. When costs of living soar high up but there is no equivalent pay rise to the
employees, the effects would be devastating on the affected parties. Most importantly, economic
factors such as inflation must be put into consideration when determining the minimum wage to
in a state or country. There must be a balance to make sure that organizations are not adversely
affected by the minimum wage policies that may be put in place. The development of people

within a society hugely depends on the ability of the wage system to responds to the needs and
circumstances of the time. In that regard, consistently reviewing the minimum wage among
different countries is one of the approaches that can be used to improve the living conditions of
the people and reduce the social challenges that come with poor remuneration. The solution of
minimum wage as this global social problem calls for the establishment of a global minimum
wage rate that should be in line with set standards and circumstances. Thus, an increase in the
minimum wage will result in several benefits for the low-income earners and the minorities and
will reduce the revenue inequality gap which currently exists in the United States

Background information
The labor market is rigged. A lot of people will agree with that. In an environment where
the owners of capital may want to maximize their profits, there is a desire to reduce the costs of
operations. One of the ways of attaining this goal is to make sure that the wages that are offered
to the employees are as low as possible. In this regard, the expenses would be down and the
profits would be up. That is a central feature in capitalism. There is a problem with the manner in
which the global labor market works. The neoliberal economic policies that were proposed by
scholars of economics many years ago have been responsible for the wage problems that the
world is currently undergoing (Miller et al, 2010). When companies start undergoing financial
difficulties, it is always important to adopt austerity measures to tackle the challenges. However,
in the process of coming up with these policies, the salaries of the employees would be the first
target.
While wealthy nations like the United States have made provisions that bar companies
within the country from proving wages below some standards, there are developing countries

that still do not have these laws. The reason for this is simple. All companies are looking for
economic environments that would allow them to thrive. These environments are always
characterized by low taxation and wages. As a result, some countries would make sure that their
wage systems are as flexible and as low as possible to attract the investors. If the wages are low,
the manufacturers are in a position to bring goods to the market that are likely to be much more
profitable than in environments where the minimum wages are regulated. It is important to note
that the problems in the developing countries are necessitated by the fact that there is a cut-throat
competition for foreign investments and the governments ar...
