Automatic Flight Control System
1.0 Introduction
An automatic flight control system gives an integration of the flight director systems and the
autopilot. The system has two flight control computers that are interlinked, two yaw dampers, a
two-axis autopilot, assorted actuators and servos, and an automatic elevator trim control. The
flight crew is commanded by the flight director to follow primary flight display cues. The FCC
(Flight control computer) receives the selections mode from the panel of flight control and sensor
information from the navigation, air data, heading and altitude reference, surface position
sensors, and the radio-altimeter systems. The then give guidance for flight commands to the
autopilot which then provides the control with signals of driving the elevator and aileron servos,
and also the horizontal stabilizer trim (World Book Inc., 2014). The director of flight gives
commands of computed steering that provide guidance on visuals for the pilot who manually
steers the aircraft according to the definitions from the operations modes selected.
2.0 The purpose of the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS)
The purpose of the AFCS is to help the pilots control the aircraft without having to pay
constant attention and also hands-on control to them. Therefore, it significantly decreases pilot’s
fatigue especially during long-range flights and also enhances many other flight safety aspects
such as weather conditions and monitoring systems (Adamsen, 2017). It has three independent
systems: The yaw damper system, Digital flight control system (DFCS), and the system of
autothrottle. They provide stabilization to the airplane about the roll, yaw, and pitch axes and
control it with inputs from the systems of radio, flight management computer, air data computer,
and heading. Roll and pitch are the two axes of the DFCS operating the ailerons and elevators
hence automatically maintaining the airspeed, altitude and automatic landings (Ziegler, 2015).

3.0 Yaw damper system
3.1 Purpose of the yaw damper system
Its main function is the minimization of the Duch roll through the provision of automatic
rudder displacement which is proportional to and opposing any yaw amount experienced.
3.2 Architecture and operating principle of the damper system
It has two dampers which are completely independent and can be operated
simultaneously or singly. One damper controls the lower rudder while the other controls the
upper. Each yaw damper has a coupler associated to it that senses yaw and operates as a rate
gyro. The damper system then engages the required movement of the rudder to damp and oppose
