What genetic diseases, or problems were determined to be potential issues?
Multiple sclerosis is a medical condition that results in major disablement of the central
nervous system (McDonald et al., 2001). MS, as is commonly referred to by many, is a condition that
could threaten my well-being as well as that of my family. Due to the unpredictable nature of the
disease, I find it relevant to consider it a threat. It is a degenerative condition that poses a threat to
my spinal cord as well as my brain. There is no explicitly known cause but the risk factors are age,
sex, climate and family history.
Provide an introduction of the disease, outlining the major signs/symptoms of the disorder, and
the reason why this was selected as a genetic/inherited disease?
As mentioned above, multiple sclerosis is a degenerative condition which affects two major
parts of the brain, the spinal cord as well as the brain (Polman et al., 2005). It causes the immune
system to attack the myelin sheath that cover the nervous system fibers. This results in a case of
severe communication breakdown between the brain and the rest of the body (Polman et al., 2005).
The common signs, and symptoms include; experienced difficulty in walking as well as constant
body fatigue. However, given the unpredictable nature of the immune system attacks on the body
