Strategic planning in an organization refers to a systematic management process of
defining its direction and appropriate allocation of resources with the aim of attaining the set-out
goals and objectives (Bryson, 2011). It involves setting priorities, strengthening operations and
focusing on energy to ensure that all stakeholders are working towards intended results. It is
important to understand the role of strategic planning in the business environment, as it is
essential in the process of identifying clear goals. Strategic planning supports in assessing the
existing capabilities and determining the expected capabilities internally and externally, in order
to provide guidelines for the formulation and implementation of the company plans.
The role of collaboration, cooperation, and coordination in an organization’s strategic
planning process
There are three major processes that drive an organization towards the accomplishment of
its goals effectively and efficiently. These are collaboration, cooperation, and coordination,
which define effective teamwork (Bryson, 2011). Strategic plans are very crucial in during the
implementation process, through collaboration, cooperation and coordination in role assignment,
prioritization and effective communication within the organization. Cooperation involves the
active participation of all stakeholders in capabilities, competencies, and resources in order to
achieve optimized use of the resources. Cooperation, therefore, acts as a partner in the process of
strategic planning, without which, there will be competition.
Coordination involves organization of all the members and efforts necessary for the
implementation of strategic plans in an organization. It is a fundamental process in which each

stakeholder identifies their respective tasks, and then uses their competencies and available
resources to achieve company goals, through effective time management and smooth workflow
between the various departments. On the other hand, collaboration creates an environment for
the stakeholders to share skills, knowledge, information, and expertise through which each
individual can adjust their goals and contribute effectively towards the achievement of
organization goals. Successful collaboration requires the availability of adequate resources. A
great working environment drives effective teamwork and promotes cooperation spirit for the
members to respect and trust each other (Bryson, 2011).
In addition, collaboration enables effective communication, which acts as an important
tool for successful development, because all stakeholders are able to accommodate each other’s
opinion and input. Different teams may have conflicting goals; however, the decision-making
