Task 3 – Cracks in Concrete
Concrete is one the most durable and long lasting products of the daily necessities. Therefore
concrete should be crack free in order to serve the structures and not risking the lives of the people
residing in these structures. Shrinkage is the main cause of cracks in the concrete structures. With
the passage of the time as the concrete dries and hardens it shrinks. This is due to the excess amount
of water available in the mixture of the concrete. The excess amount of water within the concrete
also affects the strength of the concrete. (Concrete Network, 2017) Some of the important reasons
and causes of the cracks in the concrete are as follows:

Excess amount of water

Rapid drying of concrete

Improper pouring of the concrete

Lack of control joints

(Concrete Network, 2017)
Some of the types of cracking in the concrete are discussed as follows:
Flexural Cracking:
External loads applied on the structural elements like beams, columns or slabs results in direct and
bending stresses which generates general cracks. Ever since the tensile stress in the concrete
overpasses its tensile strength it forms internal micro cracks. Where micro cracks are cracks within
the aggregate – mortar interface or the paste cracks within the mortar. Later on these micro cracks
are further developed into the macro cracks. The width of the flexural cracks initially may stay
narrow from surface of the...
