Option 2: The Hollow Men
The poem which is written by T. S Elliot is more of a reflection of the events past than it
is a deduction. The hollow man appears to be a modernist indictment of the post-world war two
society where people are processing the events that have taken place. The poem which is
characterized by short lines, irregular rhymes, faltering rhythms, and is subdued which helps in
communicating the nature of the hollow man. T. S Elliot uses the hollow man to illustrate the
human condition and human nature. The poem appears to be a lamentation of the condition of
the hollow man, and it examines the relationship the hollow man has with other worlds such as
the world of eternity and the world of death. As the poem ends with a whimper, there appears to
be little or no hope for the hollow man (Waggoner, Hyatt Howe).
It is safe to say that the term whimper is a suggestion of rebirth. It can be likened to the
sound that an infant makes upon their birth and signifies hope and salvation. Although remotely
and faintly, salvation is available for the hollow man despite the shadow hindering his salvation.
The society seems forlorn and desolate with the people holding hands to sing woeful songs in
solidarity (Waggoner, Hyatt Howe). They...
