A therapist has a duty of ensuring a client feels comfortable and safe before beginning an
assessment. In the vignette case, Laurel is a victim of rape. She was raped at gunpoint. At that time
she was a freshman in college and was from work heading to her dormitory. The event destroyed
her life, school performance, relationships and perception towards men. Five years later Laurel is
seeking therapy with complaints of depression and dissatisfaction at work.
Steps I will take to make Laurel feel comfortable with telling her story
The first step I will take to create a good rapport with Laurel is reading and understanding
her information which she has presented during the appointment. I will consider her age and sex.
She is a female of middle age. She is likely to explain herself and life experiences. After
understanding her history and traumatic experience, I will develop an active communication style
that will engage the client. By listening to Laurel, she will feel cared for and loved. I will show her
I understand her experience and feelings. These will make her open up and share the most
important and critical content with me.
I will identify her cultural background and personality to determine the speed of the
sessions. Based on personality, some clients will open up and share in-depth experience while
