Question description

For this project, you will assume a position of a law enforcement agency employee. You are required to research and present an examination of an actual detection, inspection, or surveillance tool that will increase the capability of an agency to identify or thwart threats that would cause considerable damage to a populace if successful. In addition to the technological capabilities and the expected result, consider the cost to an agency in monetary terms, goodwill to the public, and consequences if the tool is or is not purchased and deployed.

Also, research the way 2–3 detection, inspection, or surveillance technologies are moving to ensure security of the United States and ways to mitigate potential threats to security. You should pursue a corresponding humanistic (legal or ethical) approach to ensure that the technology being used for security does not, at the same time, take away or infringe upon the basic natural rights of people. You must address the technologies with regard to physical, legal, ethical, technological, and human use limitations.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in a research paper of 750–1,000 words:
    • Describe and summarize your selected detection, inspection, or surveillance technology that could be used to increase law enforcement agency capabilities.
      • How exactly will the technology be able to improve the ability of an agency to prevent or mitigate catastrophic events? Explain.
      • Consider the following when evaluating the technology:
        • Monetary costs
        • Benefits to civilian populations
        • Consequences of not implementing the technology
    • Next, select and briefly summarize 2–3 different detection, inspection, or surveillance technologies that are currently being used to ensure the security of the United States.
    • Address the following questions for each of the selected technologies:
      • How expensive and complex is the technology? Explain.
      • What are the implications of the technology with regard to citizens' rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution? Explain.
      • What unethical activities could the use of this technology facilitate? Explain.
      • How can human error play a role in the use of this technology? Explain.
  • Compile your responses into the final research paper, and submit the file to your instructor.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Limitations of Technology

Technology is one of the aspects that has impacted on various sectors. One of the sectors
that have been altered through the inception of technology is the law enforcement department. In
law enforcement, multiple techniques are embraced to ensure that the law enforcement strategies
are effective. Researchers have made attempts to incept new policies and technologies to ensure
that the law enforcement agencies carry out their responsibilities in the most efficient
way(Crasnanic and Smuleac, 2016).
In the past two decades, the advancement in telecommunications, imaging technology,
computers and remote sensing have immensely enhanced the potential for surveilling individuals
and the activities that the people tackle (Crasnanic and Smuleac, 2016). The electronic
surveillance technologies have been embraced by the federal law enforcement, and they have
played a significant role in improving the law enforcement capabilities.
One of the remarkable technology in the law enforcement department is the GPS tracking
that gives the police officers an opportunity to ascertain the direction and location of
vehicles.GPS is used to denote the satellite-based technology that determines the speed of the
vehicle and both its departure and arrival time (Balboni and Pelino, 2013). For the GPS tracking
to work efficiently, the police offices should be aware of the distance separating the satellites.
Additionally, the police officers should have information on the places where the satellites are
located.
The GPS tracking technology has benefited both the federal, local and state law
enforcement agencies. One of the benefits is that the GPS technologies enable the police officers
and the law enforcement agencies to obtain information and evidence regarding the criminals.
For instance, the federal prosecutors and law enforcement officers receive data from the cellular

phone service providers that give them an opportunity to carry out real-time tracking of the
settings and location of the mobile phones(Balboni and Pelino, 2013). The police officers
embrace the use of the GPS tracking technology in ensuring that the patrol vehicles of the police
are safe and in excellent condition. The technology under analysis is also embraced in tracking
cars that are stolen by the offenders. The GPS technology is also deployed in recording and
monitoring the movement of the suspected criminals(Crasnanic and Smuleac, 2016).
Regarding the monetary cost of the GPS technology, it is imperative to point out that the
costs of implementing the Global Positioning systems of technology are high and therefore the
law enforcement department should set aside funds to help in meeting the high costs of
technology. Failure to incept the use of the GPS systems gives an implication that the pol...
