Software Requirements Elicitation

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

One of the first tasks in a software project is to have a software requirements elicitation process where the engineering agent can identify the customer’s needs and problems to be solved. The process to perform requirements elicitation is one of the most important tasks to be accomplished because if you fail to adequately capture the requirements, you will produce a system that does not work for the end-user. Provide the following in the discussion:

  • Describe the interaction between the end-user and the developers that must take place to identify the proper user requirements.
  • Describe the types of technical issues that will be experienced during these interactions and how these developer–client identified issues are often resolved.
  • Identify the 4 steps of the requirements engineering process and provide a 1-sentence description.

Software Requirement Elicitation
The first task in a software project development, a software requirements elicitation process where
the engineering agent can identify the user’s needs and problems to be solved. The developers used
several techniques to gather user requirements from end users:

Interviews
It is the most used technique. It involves the developers meeting the users involved and engaging
in a question and answer session on matters concerning users’ experience with the current system,
problems they encounter as they use the current system and what they propose improved. Openended questions are formulated and presented to the users who answer to their satisfaction.
Developers can clarify issues they do not understand as well as users getting an option to expound
on what they feel should be in the system.

Observation
Involves an observer observing the participants in their natural setting as they interact with the
system. The observer then records findings which he reports backs the design team. The design
team can make designs of the proposed system once they analyze the findings.

Questionnaire
A technique where closed-ended questions are formulated and documented which are presented
later to users who answers accordingly. The questions are objective based, and users are required
to give specified answers concerning the system and what they would like impleme...
