Choose a commercial from the internet (YouTube Tm is a great source for this) and discuss
which of the functions of advertising are used in thus commercial and are they effective. Be
sure to give the link to the commercial in the posting.
Advertising refers to a way of communicating to consumers and buyers of a product in order to
persuade them. Advertising can be done through mass media such as newspapers, television,
radio and the internet. Consumers must be aware of a product or service that’s why the sellers
make the existence of a product known through paid advertisements. Advertising calls to
attention the consumers in order to make them aware of something. If a product or service is not
advertised people will not know if it is in the market let alone being aware of its very own
existence.
When a product is advertised in the mass media it seeks to capture the attention of the mass and
not just a small group of people. Advertisements can have both negative and positive effects to
the viewer. If the advertisement is misleading it portrays a poor business relation with the
consumers since it delivers to the public incorrect information about a product if service being
offered. Such misleading commercials sends red flags to the public that a company cannot be
trusted to deliver to its consumers.

The link above shows a YouTube commercial by a famous actor Dwayne Johnson famously
known as the Rock. The advertisement is about the I phone 7-The Rock X sir Dominate the Day.
The advertisement talks about how Dwayne Johnson’s engages in various tasks through the day
while using ‘Siri’ who helps him do everything by just giving ‘Siri’ instructions. The Rock goes
from ordering a taxi, to driving a plane to Rome, attending his fashion show, cooking, playing
music with a Chinese and finally taking a selfie while repairing a satellite in space. He does all
this with the help of ‘Siri’. The use of a celebrity is quite instrumental to the advertisement. The
celebrity adds a little more advantage to the commercial.

1. Advertising helps in identifying a brand
The most important role of advertising is to communicate the brand of a product to the
consumers and public in general. Brands make the company known to people as the masterminds
