Introduction
Cultural identity refers to the identity or the feeling that an individual has of
belonging to a given group. It is often regarded as part of an individual’s self-conception and
self-perception and is often related to ethnicity, generation, locality, nationality, religion,
social class or any social group that exhibits a distinct culture. As a result, there are several
cultural identifiers including ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, social, economic
status and sexual orientation. Within the gender identifiers, there exist three subcategories
including male, female and transgender.
The term transgender denotes to individuals whose sense of their gender contradicts
what would be expected on the basis of the sex characteristics that they were born with. In
this regard, a transgender individual may identify as a woman despite having been born with
male genitalia or vice versa, while some transgender individuals do not specifically identify
