The process of recruiting and retainingin law enforcement is an exhaustive process, not only is it time consuming, but it is also very expensive and demanding. In fact, according to Brett Meade, a Deputy Chief, the process, "may exceed $100,000 and take up to eighteen months"(Meade, 2016).This is a lot of time and money that a facility may not have depending on circumstances. In order to become a skilled officer, a lot of training needs to be implemented. The process of hiring includes interviews, background checks, training, and testing. Throughout the grueling process, recruits who are not physically or mentally prepared may choose to drop out of the program or the department may choose to let them go due to the long process. Since the process is so incredibly long, "the practice of continually accepting applications gives an agency the option of larger applicant pool and the ability to quickly contact perspective employees." (Langham, n.d.). Building a diverse agency is important, but quite difficultconsidering law enforcement has been considered a man's job for decades. Recruiting women and minorities is an influential part of recruiting in the 21st century as it represents the rights and equalities for all. With this said, it is illegal to discriminate against race or sex. Recruiters should not encourage or discourage anyone from applying to be in law enforcement.
