At the veteran's center you are assigned to counsel an adult client who has been diagnosed with PTSD. He is a 34-year-old veteran who is starting to have flashbacks and is afraid of being identified as mentally ill. He also has problems with his abusive father and has issues with authority.

Bring this case to the next staff meeting to discuss with the team. Explaining your initial counseling plan, initial concerns, and back-up plans for this patient, including 1-3 sentence responses to all of the following:

  • a description of at least 1 type of therapy you could use to assist this client effectively
  • an explanation of how you would utilize the chosen therapy
  • a description of at least 2 benefits and 1 drawback it provides

Initial concerns
PTSD can be attributed to the horrible as well as life-threatening experiences experienced
by the client in the mission. While PTSD remains manageable and as a counsellor can help the
client fully recover, his client is worsened by various factors. First, his fear of being branded as
mentally ill further escalates his condition and will slow down his recovery process. The first
process of addressing mental illnesses is for the patient to accept that he or she has a problem. As
a result, the fact the client is afraid of being identified as mentally will slow down his recovery.
Another factor that adds stress to the client’s stressful situation is his problems with his abusive
father. Abusive parents are among the causes of mental illnesses in the country. As a result, the
issues the client has with his abusive father and the horrible and abusive experiences he had with
