All projects have a common goal, which is to be successful at the end, and have the
desired outcome. The level of project management and techniques applied are key in determining
the success or failure of projects. Although failure is never a desired outcome in any project, it
offers an opportunity to learn lessons, and improve the techniques applied in future projects
(Andersen, Grude & Haug, 2009). This paper entails a summary review of the SAP system
rollout project by Avon products Inc. which failed to achieve its objectives. The paper also
analyzes the reasons for the project failure, lessons that can be drawn from this project and their
comparison to what was discussed in this unit.
The SAP system rollout was a 125-million-dollar project that entailed a new system of
sales order management within Avon products incorporation. Although the project looked
promising during commencement and early stages during 2009, it was halted in 2013. This new
enterprise software system had the purpose to introduce and build on a real-time system of
ordering with the aid of websites and mobile devices. Multiple vendors were therefore involved,
including SAP because of its back-end system and IBM, since it is a front-end solution. The two
vendors had conflicts, and therefore issues started to arise in the project process. Due to this
