Acceptable Use Policy

Purpose of the Acceptable Use Policy selected and how it provides confidentiality,
integrity, and availability within the organization.
The Acceptable Use Policybelongs to Brown University and is used to guide the users of
the institution's computer and online resources. It sets out the guiding principles that relate to the
use of the resources which relate to the educational, research related, administrative and
instructional activities of the institution. It outlines the responsibilities that the given user has
with using the resources; they are able to access a variety of online material which exposes the
organization's sensitive data and systems to both internal and external potential threats. They
should, therefore, use the resources in a manner that is responsible, ethical, and at the same
timedoes not flout any laws. The AUP outlines what constitutes acceptable and non-acceptable
behavior when it comes to the use of the resources, and outlines the various licenses and
agreements that need to be protected from violations. It outlines the conditions for contravening
the laws set out, such action includes restriction and loss of privileges by the user, and in extreme
cases even suspension from the University. The AUP is also under the umbrella of the State,
Local, and Federal laws.
The Acceptable Use Policy is applicable to all users of the computing resources which
are owned and managed by the institution. They include the faculty staff, students, alumni,
visitors, external individuals, and the organization that is accessing the services of the
institution's network from the computing facilities of the organization. The resources that are
covered under the Acceptable Use Policy include any of the resources which are owned,
licensed, and any type of arrangement for both the hardware and software which utilizes the
University's network through to either a direct or a wireless connection without regarding the

ownership of the device or the network. It also gives information on availability by outlining the
rights and responsibilities that exist and are available to the University community. It outlines
what the university provides under the AUP which includes access to specific computer systems,
servers, particular software, and databases.
Criticism of the Brown University AUP and recommendations for improvement
The Brown University Acceptable Use Policyuses language that may not be easily
understood by all users. Use of technical language should have been avoided and in its place,
simple language is used to increase the number of people that understand it. There are also terms
that are clear and laws that have not been clearly defined. The AUP stated the laws but did not
break down which particular ones are being contravened when a person does this or the other.
The article has several hyperlinks that lead to the secondary material making it difficult for the
user to follow the information. The article is also long and not easy to remember what is
stipulated without having to refer back to the material more several times.
The Acceptable Use Policy can be improved by making the article short and concise
while still being able to touch...
