• The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that there are 65 federal agencies and 27 offices of
inspector general that hire full-time staff accredited to make arrests and carry weapons (Peak,
2000).
• There are over 17,000 state and local law enforcement agencies in the US, from 2 to over 30,000
officers and they include;
