"Myths in Neolithic Cultures Around the Globe"

Mythology serves in several different functions and is based upon the individual's standards, beliefs, or their own agenda. One function is based on religious beliefs or background. The Pueblos practice their religious ceremonies and consider them to be sacred, thus not allowing outsiders to see. Their ancient myths is that they were born from Mother Earth like seeds. They also believe that the spirits live with in nature. This is similar to some modern Pantheism beliefs that the body should remain pure and that they came from the earth. Pantheism also believes that when one dies they will return to the other. This is also similar to Christian belief. Most Christians participate in ceremonial celebration of life called a funeral in which most priest or pastors will read a scripture that states "we therefore commit his body to the ground; earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust" returning them to the ground for burial.

The other function that most myths provide is a sense of history. Providing stories of ancestral backgrounds so that the youth in their community and/or culture have some responsibility and respect. The Kojiki provide a history lesson about their religious beliefs and explain a time before the heavens and the earth came about. Their history teaches obedience and responsibility of two individuals, Izanagi and Izanami. The two had to rely and help each other in order to carry out their mission. Which this is something that is taught in present day. Most parents that have multiple children teach their children to care for and help their siblings. I think that most of the functions of the historic myths are to provide understanding of why things are and how they came about and to help those coming up to take pride in their community and in themselves.
