Actually Chlorine is a gas at room temperature. Mixed form of
chlorine is also used as an Ordinary table salt (i.e. sodium chloride,
NaCl) it is also known as half chlorine, thus a simple electrochemical
reaction of sodium chloride with salt water produces chlorine gas more
easily. Thus, the same reaction produces with sodium hydroxide (NaOH),
and by mixing chlorine gas with sodium hydroxide you create sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl).
Moreover Chlorine acts as a greatest disinfectant so that it is
majorly used in pools and waters. This has the ability to kill germs,
various other bacteria, viruses and algae present in the water. Chlorine
is also used for cleaning clothes which acts as a greatest stain
remover, but not only because of the chlorine. Natural stains (as well
as dyes) produced by everything which come from chemical compounds
called chromophores. Chromophores can easily absorb
light at definite wavelengths and therefore produces colors. Thus, the
reaction of chlorine with water, resulting in the production of
hydrochloric acid and atomic oxygen. Thus, the oxygen reacts easily with
these chromophores to eradicate the portion of its structure that
causes the color.
