a freight train leaves the train station 4 hours before a passenger train. the two trains are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. if the rate of the passenger train is 11 mph faster than the freight train, how fast is each train traveling if the passenger train passes the freight train in 20 hours.

Let F = speed of the freight train

Let P = speed of the passenger train

P = F + 11

When the passenger train passes the freight train they are at the same distance

Distance = Speed x time

D = F x 24

D = P x 20

24F = 20P

Now substitute P = F + 11 into the equation

24F = 20(F+11)

24F = 20F + 220

4F = 220

F = 55 mph

P = 55+11 = 66 mph
