The base of a rectangle is one more then three times the height.  The area is 14 sq. in.  What is the base?

A = base* height

base = 3h + 1

(3h+1)(h) = 14

3h^2+h=14

b=12

h=2

The only number that makes this true is 2. 2*2=4*3=12+2=14 :)

Thank you so much.

No problem! By the by, the factoring works as follows:

3h^2+h-14=0

(3h+7)(h-2)=0

h=2

h=-7/3

The second solution is clearly impossible, so only the first works :)
