Explain your opinion on play and how you believe it affects toddler development. List ideas for play that you would share with families. These could be games, activities or ideas that they can use in their home.
Play is important for motor and social development. Games and puzzles are great for toddlers because they can learn to take turns, develop fine motor skills such as fitting pieces together, and learn to think critically as well as creatively. A really good game is the matching game in which toddlers must find the matching pictures of two separate cards. In order to help toddlers do well, the cards (each card that has a matching card with the same picture on it) would be placed face up on the floor in a big pile. The toddler would then have to pick out the cards that have matching pictures. Once the toddler masters the game, the cards could then be flipped over one at a time so the toddler would have more of a challenge. Another game would be the animal game where the parent or family member would say the name of the animal and the toddler would have to find the card with that animal on it.
