Introduction
The composers of this period were noticeable by an awakening period of
literature, music and cultural proliferation that started in the 1920s and early 1930s
among the African-American community in New York. The movement was key to
evolving a new sense of Black uniqueness and consciousness as authors, visual artists,
and musicians where they tested with imaginative forms, modernist practices, and
folk culture. The Harlem Renaissance was considered to be the rebirth of AfricanAmerican arts, which also influenced writers even in the Caribbean colonies
(Huggins, 2007). The principle that was predominantly captured was the flowering of
the African-American literature, an identity unique among the African-Americans.
The major aim of the Renaissance was to revive the African-American heritage and
pride. It stressed racial awareness that led to the African-American gaining civil
privileges and equal treatment. It was a time frequently related to a movement called
