Purdue University Global Business Statistics and Quantitative Analysis
Topic: Is this Normal? One theory about the daily changes in the closing price of a stock is that these changes follow a random walk – that is, these daily events are independent of each other and move upward or downward in a random manner – and can be approximated by a normal distribution. To test this theory, collect the most recent closing prices of stocks from for your favorite company or brand. You can find this by going to finance.yahoo.com and searching for “Your Company stock history.” See Example and DB starter video in Unit 4 LiveBinder.Must be original content/response.Main Post:1) Choose your favorite company or brand and search finance.yahoo.com with that company name and “historical stock prices”. Download the stock history for this company for the past 6 weeks by selecting the appropriate dates and clicking on “Download to Spreadsheet” at the bottom of page.2) Calculate the daily change in the closing stock prices by taking the difference between the closing and opening price for the day. This is the daily stock change.3) Run the Descriptive Statistics->Summary Table in Excel Data Analysis on the daily stock change. Share the summary table.4) Calculate the 1st and 3rd quartiles of the daily stock change. Share these along with the min, median, and max from 3) as your 5-Number Summary.5) Create a Box & Whiskers Plot using your 5-Number Summary. (For Help, refer to Unit 2 LiveBinder).6) Is your daily stock change distribution right skewed (median < mean), left skewed (mean < median), or symmetric (mean ≈ median)? Would you consider your daily stock change to be normally distributed? Why or Why Not?

Covenant Hospital Clinic Staffing
Covenant Hospital operates a main hospital and three outlying clinics in a medium-size city. All four locations perform similar outpatient services, and patients typically visit the location nearest them. The hospital has recently had more congestion—longer waiting lines—than it (or its patients) would like. As part of a study to learn the causes of these long lines and to suggest possible solutions, all locations have kept track of customer arrivals during 1-hour intervals for the past 10 weeks. All locations are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. For each location, the hospital and clinics collected data that contains the number of customer arrivals during each hour of a 10-week period. The manager of Covenant has hired you to make some sense of these data. Specifically, your task is to present charts and/or tables that indicate how customer traffic into the hospital locations varies by day of week and hour of day. There is also interest in whether any daily or hourly patterns you observe are stable across weeks. Although you don't have full information about the way the hospital currently runs its operations—you know only its customer arrival pattern and the fact that it is currently experiencing long lines—you are encouraged to append any suggestions for improving operations based on your analysis of the data.Review the Covenant Hospital data files. Reflect on what analyses might be required to address the manager's request. The Assignment: (3–5 pages)Submit your answers and embedded Excel analysis as a Microsoft Word management report.Be sure to adhere to APA format when generating your management report.Albright, S. MATLAB in Math 244
Math 244 uses MATLAB assignments to given an opportunity for students to explore the computational side of differential equations and see how MATLAB can be used to solve and visualize these equations. Assignments and due dates will be decided by individual instructors. In order to complete the assignments, students will need the supplemental MATLAB functions as well as the format files provided here.
In general, it is assumed that students in the Engineering major will already have some exposure to MATLAB before this class, both in their major classes and in Math 251. If a refresher is needed on this material, you can consult the webpage here or discuss it with your instructor. There are also details provided for these particular lab assignments on the webpage here. It may also be helpful to complete the Lab 0 assignment here
to get practice on some of the basics needed to complete these assignments. The MATLAB documentation for any method you want to use (which will come up if you Google it) is also very good once you get a handle on the basic syntax of MATLAB.

NOTES:
Individual instructors may assign the MATLAB assignments at differing dates throughout the semester.
It is suggested that MATLAB assignments be collected one week after they are assigned.

Chamberlain University Week 5 Probability and Normal Distribution Lab Report
Scenario/SummaryThis week's lab highlights the use of probability and normal distribution.Follow the directions below to gather data, calculate using Excel spreadsheets, and interpret the results.DeliverablesThe deliverable is a Word document with your answers to the questions posed below based on the data you find.Required SoftwareMicrosoft WordMicrosoft ExcelSteps to Complete Week 5 LabUse the Weeks 3 and 5 spreadsheets to help you answer the questions below.Step 1: Survey or measure 10 people to find their heights. Determine the mean and standard deviation for this group by using the Week 3 Excel spreadsheet. Post a screen shot of the portion of the spreadsheet that helped you determine these values. How does your height compare to the mean (average) height of the group that you surveyed? Is your height taller, shorter, or the same as the mean of your group?Data Example of 10 people with different heightsStep 2: Give some background information on the group of people you used in your study. You might consider using the following questions to guide your answer. How did you choose the participants for your study (sampling method)? What part of the country did your study take place in?What are the age ranges of your participants? How many of each gender did you have in your study? What are other interesting factors about your group?Step 3: Use the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet for the following.(Use the Empirical Rule tab from the spreadsheet). Determine the 68%, 95%, and 99.7% values of the Empirical Rule in terms of the ten heights in your height study. What do these values tell you?Post a screen shot of your work from the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet.
Week 5 Spreadsheet Example(Use the normal probability tab from the spreadsheet). Based on your study results, what percent of the study participants are shorter than you? What percent are taller than you?Post a screen shot of your work from the Week 5 Excel spreadsheet.Example: If my height is 73 inches, then 20.86% of the relevant population is shorter. The other 79.14%, of course, is taller.Week 5 Spreadsheet ExampleStep 4: Be sure your name is on the Word document, save it, and then submit it under "Assignments" and "Week 5: Lab".
