The situation theory of leadership argues that there is no one best or rather a perfect style
of leadership for all situations. Instead, good leadership entails adjusting styles to suit the
situation at hand. According to this theory, the most effective leadership is one whereby styles
are adjusted the time to time according to different situations, types of tasks, nature of groups
being handled, among other factors. Situational leadership is indeed a practical approach that is
quite easy to understand as well as to apply. It can also be applied to many settings. When
leaders adapt styles fit for the situation at hand or particular followers' needs, work gets done
effectively, good relationships are built between the team members, and the followers'
developmental level is more likely to rise (Bierman et al, 2015). The features of this theory are
quite useful and relevant in developing an effective leadership considering several reasons. First,
the theory suggests that the amount of direction and support leaders give each of their followers
should vary depending on the follower's developmental level, commitment as well as
competence in a particular task. The best-known situational leadership model in the human
resource field and psychology is the one established by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard. The two
come up with a leadership matrix with four leadership style for a manager matching four
developmental levels for the followers. The leader provides more direction and support at lower
compared to higher levels of development.
