Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the global economy, and the
United States is no exception. Various aspects of life were affected significantly and one
group that has been particularly affected by the pandemic is the older workforce which has
experienced unique challenges due to the pandemic. This report aims to examine the effects
of the COVID-19 pandemic on the older workforce in the United States while focusing on the
impact on their employment status, retirement arrangements, well-being, and health. The
report is based on a wide range of sources which are; quantitative approaches such as
hypothesis testing, regression analysis, descriptive analysis, and government data which
include; the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, OECD, and FRED to provide an overview of the
issues facing the older workforce.
The findings indicate that the pandemic has had a significant impact on the older
workforce with many experiencing job losses, and reduced working hours while others have
difficulty finding new jobs. The pandemic has also highlighted existing inequalities in the
workforce, especially low-wage workers who are more likely to be older and experience high
rates of job loss. Furthermore, the pandemic has had negative effects on the health of workers
who have a higher risk of severe illnesses and mortality from COVID-19. The report
concludes by outlining policy recommendations such as protection against age discrimination
in the workplace, employment opportunities, training, and easy access to healthcare, to
support the older workforce during and after the pandemic.

while the pandemic affected individuals of all ages, older workers aged over 55 years, have
particularly been vulnerable to the pandemic’s economic and health impacts(Ghilarducci et
al,2020). In recent years, the older workforce has been on the rise and these workers have
been a vital component of the American labor market.
This pandemic has shown specific setbacks for the older workforce including job
losses, and severe illness from COVID-19. This report will analyze the impacts of the
pandemic on the older workforce including health, employment status, retirement plans, and
well-being. The report will also offer policy suggestions to support the older workforce
during and after the pandemic including increased access to healthcare, employment
opportunities, and training.
