CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS IN MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
Each society, race country or ethnic group has a culture that is unique and may be
different from other cultures. Due to the world’s globalization, it is important to understand and
respect the culture of others, in the line of duty among various professions especially mental
health nursing. Mental health nurses need therefore to incorporate skills of cultural sensitivity
and cultural competence when dealing with clients from a different social-cultural background.
This paper discusses how a mental health nurse can be culturally aware when handling a client

There are various factors to assess, regarding the client’s culture. Language is an
important aspect of any client’s culture, whereby people from different cultures use different
languages to communicate. As a competent health nurse, it is not a healthy practice to assume
that the client understands the language the common language or language of preference such as
English. Also, there are some titles which are given to individuals of different cultures or
languages such as Mr. Mrs., or miss, which are different in other languages of different cultures.
Language assessment is important in determining what language a nurse and client can use to
communicate and what titles can be used during the assessment and treatment sessions. If the
client is comfortable with English, then it will be used throughout the entire treatment process.
