Cortazzo and Lichtman (2014) assert that methemoglobinemia is a condition in which
insufficient oxygen get into the cells. Usually, hemoglobin, which is a protein attached to one’s
red blood cells, carries oxygen throughout the bloodstream (Bergersen, Medalion, & Lytle,
2018). It then releases the oxygen into one’s red blood cells, and the cells get saturated with
sufficient oxygen. However, Cortazzo and Lichtman (2014) argue that, in some individuals’
body, there’s a type of hemoglobin called methemoglobin that although it carries oxygen through
the bloodstream, it does not supply it to the cells. Some bodies produce much methemoglobin
that replaces the hemoglobins and results in less oxygen supply to the cells.
