a radar unit is used to measure speeds of cars on US-31. the speeds are normally distributed with a mean of 68 miles per hour and a standard deviation of 5 miles per hour. what is the probability that a car picked at random is travelling at more than 73 miles per hour?

Number of cars going below mean = 50 % of total number of cars

Now mean +1*standard deviation = 68+5 = 73 miles per hour

Now number of cars upto 73 miles per hour = 50% + 34.1 % = 84.1 % (using properties of Normal distribution curve)

Hence number of cars above 73 miles = 100-84.1 = 15.9 %

Hence probability that a car will have speed more than 73 miles per hour

= 15.9/100

=0.159
