Dory in Finding Nemo and mental illness
Dory in Finding Nemo is the exact opposite of the typical portrayal of mental illness. It’s a
gripping, honest portrayal of what mental illness is. It shows the challenges people suffering
from amnesia get to deal with on a daily basis. Mental illness can be very debilitating, in this
case, Dory struggles to learn new things and maintain relationships as it is difficult even to hold a
conversation as Dory forgets very easily. This can be very frustrating. In the movie, one can be
able to figure out that Dory suffers from anterograde amnesia, she tries to help Marlin (Nemo’s
father) to find his son but due to the impairment of her short-term memory, she faces some
challenges. For instance, she witnesses Nemo being captured by a certain boat and after
conversing with Marlin for a while she decides to show him the direction the boat followed. She,
however, forgets who Marlin is shortly after. As two companions set about the journey of finding
Nemo, the seriousness of her memory problems become more apparent. It is difficult for to learn
