You are managing an automobile manufacturing facility and had observed an employee
that is violating safety rules. Discuss how this can be corrected using social cognitive
theory.
The social cognitive theory focuses on how individuals learn from each other, their
actions and experiences through interaction with their environment. The social cognitive theory
can be used to correct employee behavior in an automobile company to reduce the violation of
safety rules through the integration of passive and active strategies. The passive safety strategies
will mainly include the structural changes while the active will be inclusive of the behavioral
changes (Gielen, 2003). In other words, the passive approach relies on changing the work
environment in the automobile manufacturing facility to make it safer for the employees, for
example, the visual identification and highlighting of safety hazards, and change or improvement
of facility design to make the automobile facility safer. The active safety approach will focus on
the employee behavior change which will be done through the introduction of emergency
response and preparedness training and drills.
Your company just received a contract for a new widget. Your staff is trained in making
other material components put your boss is confident that they can be trained to make
widgets. The problem is that the timeline for delivery is tight and the staff will need to start
production right away. Your boss is asking your advice on positive or negative
reinforcement for training this task.
Positive reinforcement strengthens a response while negative reinforcement weakens a
response. The positive reinforcement will include a source of motivation in the form of a reward
while the negative reinforcement will include punishment (Wei, 2014), employee monitoring and
policy compliance. For there is not enough delivery timeline, both the negative and positive
reinforcements should be incorporated to increase productivity. The negative reinforcement like
formulating policies will involve more work by shortening their breaks, constantly monitoring
them and reminding them to be productive will press the employees in a negative manner. As a
result, strains and complaints will arise but will serve to increase their work efficiency and
productivity. The positive reinforcement inform of a reward will have the employees motivated
at the same time during the training of the creation of the new widget which will help meet the
delivery deadline of the widget.
Your boss is thinking about offering an incentive of $2 per widget built for each employee;
what should he consider before implementing the incentive program?
As a way of motivating the employees, the considerations made for the incentive program
before its implementation are the sufficiency of funds, value, time, and appropriateness (Society
of Human Resource Management, 2016). For the two dollars per widget incentive program to
work effectively, employees should value the incentive. The two dollar per widget incentive is of
more value when aligned with the company goals, vision and mission. Wi...
