Law Enforcement Training Standards

This week’s assigned readings focus on how individual departments or organizations designed their training programs to meet regulated training standards. Conduct research on federal and state training standards through the Internet and the Ashford Online Library. Then, based upon the assigned readings and your own research, discuss the following:

  • How do state and federal training standards differ?
  • How are law enforcement training standards evaluated and maintained?
  • Who governs the review of training at the state and federal levels?
  • Is there a federal authority assigned to maintain training standards for law enforcement from state-to-state?
  • What impact do this authority and training standards have on law enforcement officers?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

State and federal training standards differ in many ways. Most differences come up especially during administration. In a state that falls under state jurisdiction, employees are required to comply with the state run program. If they are in a state that falls under federal they are expected to comply with all federal regulations. State exists when a states makes a decision that its work places require additional clarification and regulations to make sure employees are safe while federal encourages states to run their own programs but only fifty percent of the states may agree to do so.  Programs that are run by the state are required to at least meet the minimum federal requirements, when the state is implementing its own program it adopts the majority of federal requirements. Hence, a state can adopt stricter regulations that those required by the federal.

Law enforcement training standards are evaluated and maintained by the Academic Program Division. The division provides oversight and the management of the basic course. Their responsibilities include developing programs and curricula designed to prepare professional law enforcers services in all the fields involved. They conduct need assessment of field operations to ensure validity of training programs. The training standards are often reviewed to suit new situations as they comes (Harlow & United States1994).

The Advanced Academic Division makes so much impact on the law enforcement officers. They ensure that the officer is trained on the entire required field before graduating to the next level which is service to the people. It also enables the offices to deal with new situations that come up they do this by frequently reviewing and revising the curricula.
