Week 9 Assignment

Application: Collective Bargaining

Unions have played an important role in U.S. government organizations, particularly at the state and local levels, for a number of decades. However, the reactions to government unions by managers and the general public are far from uniform.

For this Assignment, review this week’s resources. Review Chapter 11 of Human Resources Management for Public and Nonprofit Organizations. Review the resource titled “Exercise 12.1: No Union-Related E-mail.”

The Assignment:

  • Explain whether you agree with the decision made by the National Labor Relations Board in regard to the use of e-mail. Justify your answer.
  • Explain whether there are other issues that should have been considered in rendering the decision.
  • Explain whether the “Exercise 12.1: No Union-Related E-mail” exemplifies the role of collective bargaining to solve workplace issues in government and non-profit organizations.

Be sure to support your Assignment with specific references to the resources and other current literature in the Walden Library. Use at least three scholarly sources from the library that were published within the past five years to support your paper.

Your Assignment must demonstrate both breadth and depth of knowledge and critical thinking appropriate to graduate-level scholarship. It must follow APA Publication Manual guidelines and be free of typographical, spelling, and grammatical errors. The Assignment should be 2–3 pages in length (double-spaced), not including the title page, abstract, and references.

Submit your Assignment by Day 7.

Disagreement with decision made by the National Labor Relations Board in regard to the
use of e-mail
I do not agree with the decision by the National Labor Relations Board in restricting the
use of e-mail and giving the employers the right to stop such communication. The argument of
those that ruled in favor of such a move argued that the employer has the right to control the
activities of the employee usage of company property (Pynes, 2009). Communication is at the
center of employees and workplace activities and so should not be restricted. The use of common
day tools like emails has become part and parcel of the...
