When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.

The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

In Part II of the assignment (due Week 4), you will write a paper to synthesize your ideas.

Part II – Writing
Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify the informal fallacies, assumptions, and biases involved in manipulative appeals and abuses of language.
  • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

Running head: CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON SCHOOL UNIFORM Conflicting Viewpoints on School Uniform 1 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON SCHOOL UNIFORM 2 Introduction The Believing Game is important in helping individuals to be welcoming to both sides of an argument with the hopes attempt to see some sense in the opposing views even when they tend to be wrong. By using the tool of believing, one does not scrutinize the flaws in an idea but find the hidden virtues that may be present in the midst. This paper addresses the topic of students having to wear school uniforms whereby I strongly support the wearing of uniforms in schools. The paper will identify the reasons that oppose students wearing uniforms and for each opposing reason, the paper will answer the believing questions suggested by Elbow. The Reasons Opposing the Wearing of School Uniforms by Students The main reason in which people oppose the wearing of school uniforms is that the freedom of expression in students is restricted by school uniforms (ProCon.org, 2017). The other opposing reason is that bullying is not stopped by school uniforms and violent attacks may be increased by this requirement. The final opposing view is that academic preparedness, attendance, or exam results are not improved by wearing school uniforms. Freedom of Expression in Students is Restricted by School Uniforms The interesting thing about this opposing view is that students have various ways of using their freedom of expression and wearing uniforms can also be used to express the pride of their schools. Furthermore, uniforms are only worn during school time and thus they have the rest of the time to express themselves using all the other kinds of clothing and or accessories(Baumann and Krskova, 2016). If I believed this view, I notice that students should not be forced to wear uniforms because this is restricting their freedom to express themselves using all manner of CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON SCHOOL UNIFORM 3 dressing. This idea might be true under the condition that the freedom of expression is only expressed through the way people dress. Bullying is Not Stopped by School Uniforms and Violent Attacks May Be Increased by This Requirement The obliging thing about this opposing view is that although bullying is not stooped by wearing school uniforms, the behaviors of students are positively enhanced by wearing uniforms (DeMitchell and Fossey, 2015). This is because the wearing of uniforms make students feel more unified and professional; thus resulting in behaving in a professional manner. If I held any merit to this opposing view, I must say that I can attribute bullying and violent attacks in schools with the practice of forcing students to wear uniforms. This idea might be true in the sense that bullying and violent attacks in schools is a way of students expressing their dissatisfaction with the requirement of actually wearing uniforms. Academic Preparedness, Attendance, or Exam Results Are Not Improved By Wearing School Uniforms The helpful thing about this view is that although exam results and attendance in some students may not be improved by uniforms, academic preparedness can be improved by uniforms since they reduce distractors in class which may be caused by status symbol clothing and fashion trends (Baumann and Krskova, 2016). If I believe in this view, I notice that I would support students not to wear uniforms if this can enhance their academic preparedness and exam results. This idea might be true in the sense that the requirement to wear uniforms negatively impacts students and hence making them lower their academic preparedness, attendance, or perform poorly. CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON SCHOOL UNIFORM 4 Conclusion As a parent with children who wears uniform, it was hard to resist biases towards my view that wearing school uniforms is important to students because even the opposing views have some sense of truth. The tool of believing was important in viewing the opposing arguments in some sense of truth although I still strongly support the wearing of uniforms by students since they make all students equal regardless of their economic background. Although some students have reasons to justify why they oppose wearing uniforms, others still support the practice and understand the simplicity of making it only about education and not fashion; hence schools should consider the views of both sides and make a conscious decision when making it mandatory for students to wear uniforms.
