While most people expect that individuals working in the correction facilities to
demonstrate the highest level of ethical conduct, this is not always the case. Over the years,
correctional officers have been blamed while others have been convicted for having committed
crimes, often leading to public outcry. Despite numerous ethical codes and investigations being
carried out in our prisons in order to eliminate correctional officers’ misconduct, issues such as
mistreatment of inmates through several forms of punishment and beatings, sexual misconducts,
accepting gratuities for special consideration during legitimate activities and for the protection of
illicit activities, and arbitrary use of power remains common.
