Description
Read the following case vignette:
Tameka is a 45-year-old divorced mother whose two children are now older, married, and living in another state. Tameka has worked two jobs for years while she put her two daughters through a private high school in her community. Both daughters were good students and took advantage of Tameka's guidance and assistance as she mentored them into early adulthood. They love their mother and were grateful for her ability to help them select colleges and later employment opportunities. The oldest daughter is now married. She is working for a large cable company and has recently been promoted to a position in North Carolina, nine hours from her mother's home. The youngest daughter was married last month and has moved to Colorado with her new husband. For the first time in 24 years, Tameka finds herself alone at home. She is not sure what to do with herself. She has decided to come to the women's transitional center in her community. She has heard good things about what they do and hopes she will learn about some service that will give her life more meaning. |

Questions that I would ask Tameka to assess her current Stage of Change
If you were to change anything in your present life, what would you change? Why would you
change it?
What attempts or efforts have you made so far to change your current situation?
What are your expectations, regarding benefits and challenges?
Based on my creativity and insight into this case, these are some possible strengths to
use in the assessment process with Tameka
Tameka is a strong woman, having supported her two daughters as a divorced mother, educated
them and assisted them to seek employment opportunities.
She has mentoring and counseling skills which have helped her walk the two children through
their education and early adulthood.
What are 2-3 Motivational Interviewing questions you would use to employ change?
What are the good things about having your daughters grown, successful employed and
married? What are the less good things about the same?
I think you are an achiever because very few women are strong enough to handle a situation
like yours if they found wore your shoes, do you feel the same?
What do you see as the presenting problem?
The presenting problem, in this case, is that Tameka finds herself lonely since her two
daughters are married and live in different states plus she is not married and does not know
what to do with herself to give her life more meaning.
What would you include in Tameka’s assessment?
