Assignment 2: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay – Part II Synthesizing and Writing Due Week 4 and worth 100 points When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking. Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you address the following: 1.Restate your topic from Assignment 1, give your position on the topic, and explain why you chose that topic. Identify two (2) opposing views on the topic, and then present the view that you’ll try to defend in the assignment. Be prepared to support your opinion with academic sources. 2.Identify three (3) reasons to support your position. In separate paragraphs, go through each reason and describe why it supports the position you took in the first section. 3.Go back to your Believing Game answers from Assignment 1. Describe why you thought those responses were true. What led you to ‘believe’ things in that way? Was it an expectation (straw man) or did you truly examine what they were saying? 4.Identify at least two (2) biases you experienced in your examination of the topic. How did the biases support or contradict the position you took? Did the biases create a barrier to your thinking? 5.Since we all have biases or opinions, how did your own background shape the way you felt about the topic you presented in the first section? 6.Now that you have used the Believing Game, has your thinking about the topic changed? If so, why? If not, why not? Running Head: CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ESSAY Conflicting Viewpoints Essay Michaela Jones Professor Edward Pedrero PHI 210 – Critical Thinking 12 January 2018 1 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ESSAY 2 Conflicting Viewpoints Essay Conflicting viewpoints can arise from both doubting game and believing game. The mirror image of the doubting game can be termed as the believing game or critical thinking. In other words, it is the practice of being so kind and generous to every idea we encounter. This is listening to views different from our own and holding back from arguing with them, but also trying to believe them. When in a conflicting viewpoints cognitive and psychological skills should be applied to reach to a consensus (Elbow 1973). This paper will argue why I think social networking such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are not good to the society. This paper will clearly bring out the negative impacts of social media that promote moral decay in the society. Media and entertainment are the main arsenals of moral decay in our society. I strongly believe that social media are not good for the society. The pros part of social media and entertainment opposes my stand by stating that social networking platforms spreads information faster than other modes of information transfer (ProCon.org. 2018). The most interesting facts about this opinion is that the site does not consider the kind of information being spread. According to my stand and believe this information could be true and reliable if information being spread is morally upright to the society. Does social networking help Law enforcement to capture and prosecute criminals (ProCon.org (2018))? According to the pros side of social networking there is a belief that social networking aids law enforcers in tracking lawbreakers. Any loyal citizen in any country can attest to the fact that criminals use social platforms to plan evil deeds and to evade the law enforcers. Social media platforms help in making crimes more complicated hence making it even harder for justice to be served accordingly. The argument about social media promoting law application could be unbeatable if only criminals do not use the same platforms to cover their evil deeds. 3 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ESSAY The use of social networks does not contribute to person's quality of life and it does not reduce the risk of health problems. According to Day & Gray, A (2012) report, Modern technology especially on social media has contributed largely on reducing life expectancy rate. For instance, health problems such as cancer, hearing impairments and even eyesight disorders are facilitated by the use of computers and other appliances that are key apparatus in social networking. This factor could be true if only there is no health issues associated with these social networking sites. In conclusion, social networking platforms have both negative and positive impacts in our society. Human beings need social media platforms in their daily life and hence they cannot shun away from them. However, social networking sites should be used wisely to promote good morals in our society (Lippman & Walter 1939). Concisely, social media should be used for the good of the society but not for the eradication of moral and ethics that hold society together. References Day, C., & Gray, A. (2012). Introduction
Social media are widely used sources of information today. Twitter, Facebook,
Instagram, and other social media platforms are gaining popularity as each day goes by. As a
result, they are getting improved with more features while new others get introduced from time
to time. However, the competition is too high as users chose which platform conveys what they
want to hear or see. Social media is bad for the society considering the fact that it is hard to
control what information it conveys, its impact on people’s life, as well as how it limits people’s
privacy, however, it is an important source of information and helps in maintaining law and
order as well.
People of all kinds have access to social media. It is widely used by many people, both
good and bad, and it is hard to control what these people post on social media even for the
platform administrators themselves. As a result, bad people use social media to spread the bad
gospel. Cyberbullying has become very common today as such bad people attack individuals
who are weak to defend thems...
