Many opposing views about education exist today. Debates are on whether learning should
base on intellect or character. Some theories are student-centered whereas others are teachercentered and attempt to solve fundamental issues in learning (Howe, 2014). This paper develops a
philosophy of education revolving around essentialism and progressivism, with details on purpose
of education, use of standards-based instruction to meet diverse student needs, ethical frameworks,
the teacher as an advocate, and reflective process of an educator.
Purpose of Education
Education aims at the acquisition of intellectual skills such as mathematical and reading
skills. According to Flynn (2006), essentialism philosophical approach to education advocates that
students be taught crucial aspects such as academic skills and knowledge. Education promotes
traditional subjects such as math, natural science, and literature. In elementary schools with an
essentialist and progressivism set up, learners get writing and reading skills and subjects associated
with creative skills.
Economical and professional purposes, education prepares learners for job opportunities
