NR439: Evidence-Based Practice

Reading Research Literature – Week 5
The following questions pertain to:
Velayutham, S. G., Chandra, S. R., Bharath, S., & Shankar, R. G. (2017). Quantitative balance and
gait measurement in patients with frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer diseases: A pilot
study. Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, 39(2), 176-182. doi:10.4103/02537176.203132

1) What is the purpose of this research?
The key purpose of this research is to estajblish if diagnostic testing of balance and gate are
benefit in the early diagnoss of AD; Alzeihmer’s Disease and FTD; frontotemmporal Dementia. By
the use of this technique, its is expected that, early detection of the above-mentioned diseases will
promote a specific plan of treatment sonce gait and balance are capable of preventing falls in these
populations in the future.
2) What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.
Do specific areas of gait and balance get affected in individuals diagnosed with
frontotemmporal Dementia and Alzeihmer’s Disease? Is this information useful in developing a
care plan to prevent falls in the future?
3) Give a complete description of the research design of this study.
This is a quantitative research design as it employs the use of specific numbers and
percentages in making comparisons of studies in gait and balance. To add on, it is rather evident
that, 3 cohort groups with similar characteristics were compared.
4) What is the population (sample) for this study.
