Thesis Statement
Despite environmental and genetic factors impacting brain structure and function,
research reveals that alterations of the brain structure are implicated in the manifestation of
personality disorder; thus, it is essential to consider biological and psychological factors in
diagnosing and treating this condition.
Brain Research Project
Research indicates that individuals with BPD have lower gray matter in particular brain
regions, meaning that changes in brain structure could manifest this condition. A borderline
personality disorder is a mental condition that impacts one's thoughts, behavior, and emotions.
Although the actual cause of this condition is a mystery, several studies indicate that it might
result from changes in the brain's structure and function, including gray matter. Gray matter
constitutes cell bodies of neurons responsible for processing information and formulating
decisions studies on the brain structure of an individual with BPD reveal identical differences in
gray matter compared to those without the disorder. Furthermore, individuals with borderline
personality disorder have reduced gray matter in crucial brain areas, including the amygdala,
prefrontal cortex, insula, and hippocampus (O’neill & Frodi 769). These regions regulate
functions that can be disrupted in an individual with the disorder. In addition, other studies
indicate that gray matter density is altered for individuals with BPD. There might be increased

density in the amygdala tasked with enhanced emotional activity and decreased density in the
anterior cingulate cortex responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation. Also,
longitudinal research reveals that gray matter structure is subject to change over time.
Researchers suggest that gray matter volume may reduce over time for individuals with
Borderline Personality disorder, considering the severity of the disorder. Consequently,
psychologists and mental health practitioners must incorporate biological and psychological
factors in diagnosing and treating BPD. However, it is worth noting that despite these changes in
brain structure directly associated with BPD manifestation, it does not explain the complexities
of this condition.
Despite environmental conditions having an immense impact on bra...
