Executive Summary
When a man without prior government or military experience sits on the sear behind the
Oval Office desk, many things are bound to happen. The story of the rise of Donald Trump is
like a script that has been lifted straight from Hollywood. During the run-up to the 2016
American presidential elections, a lot of commentators did not see the way through which Trump
could defeat Hillary Clinton, the former first lady who had also served as the country as its top
envoy. With her experience and networks in politics, it was reasonable to reason that she would
easily defeat Trump. And truly, she defeated Trump in popular vote, only for her to lose college
votes. That aside, since Trump took control of running the affairs of the government, the
billionaire businessman has been a disaster. His public approval ratings as at January 2018 are
the lowest in the history of the country. Looking at the era of Trump, a keen observer looks back
at the 1950's when the then-senator for Wisconsin, Joseph McCarthy, came up with a barrage of
allegations to the effect that some communist characters had infiltrated the state department.
Instructively, when pressed to provide evidence, McCarthy had nothing substantial to
demonstrate his allegations. Similarly, Donald Trump, since he was sworn into office, has made
many allegations that he could not substantiate. Both Trump and McCarthy have in their actions
and statements sought to promote the white supremacist ideas in America.
