Southern New Hampshire University Individual Therapy & Therapeutic Groups Responses
Respond to the blog post of three colleagues in one or more of the following ways:Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.Validate an idea in your colleague’s post with your own experience. Colleague 1: Lheriise A description of your field education experience to include an explanation of your agency, the types of social services offered, and the population groups or clientele served by your agency.I'm completing my field experience at an agency that serves the eating disorder population. Through evidence based practice this agency provides individual, group and family therapy to clients. Within a group therapy session clients are able to learn Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to replace unhealthy coping skills. Within a treatment stay clients also receive case management in which the clinician or social worker is able to collaborate with the client's outside providers. The clinician is also responsible in advocating for the client with the insurance company to request more days for treatment when necessary. Along with the services for clients this agency also holds events within the community to educate other providers and the general public about eating disorders. An explanation of how engagement occurs in your field education experienceAccording to Garthwait, "A skill that is related to this competency is the ability to engage with clients individually and also in large group settings" (p. 15). Engagement occurs individually and in a group setting within my field experience. Within individual sessions I ensure that clients are a part of their treatment plan so we can determine what goals feel attainable to them and so they feel more empowered. Within a group setting engagement is especially important because there are several group members and often times very different personalities which can create a difficult group dynamic. Active listening skills, empathy and adaptability are key when engaging within a group setting. ReferenceGarthwait, C. L. (2017). The social work practicum: A guide and workbook for students (7th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson.Colleague 2: Amber MA description of your field education experience to include an explanation of your agency, the types of social services offered, and the population groups or clientele served by your agency My field experience is at a behavioral hospital where they treat and stabilize individuals with a wide variety of diagnosis and conditions. The main goal of the hospital is stabilization and takes in those who are detoxing for substances, who have behavioral or psychiatric issues. Patients will receive stabilization and treatment whether it be in form of groups, education, or medicine. After patient leave the facility they will have 30 day scripts, and a follow up appointment with a psychiatrist in the community. The social work department conducts psychosocial assessments, family sessions, therapeutic groups and individual therapy. The vast backgrounds of the clientsAn explanation of how engagement occurs in your field education experience At my field research site, I engage with the population by conducting psychosocial assessments, individual and family sessions, being a liaison for clients to services post discharge in the community and therapeutic groups.Colleague 3: Jacqueline Description of Your Field Education ExperienceI have had the privilege of interning at The Methodist Home for Children and Youth (TMH). TMH is a group home for abused, abandoned and neglected children and youth. The agency provides a multitude of services for the population they serve which include residential facilities, therapeutic services, education, adoption services, foster home placement and reunification services. The goal for all of the children and youth that enter TMH is to be reunified with their parental homes when possible, but when that can not be done then they are given a loving environment in which they can thrive and grow. In addition, TMH assists with placing the children into foster homes and with being adopted when it is determined that the child will thrive in that environment. Some children function better in group home settings and remain with TMH well into adulthood. The minimum age for children to enter is 6 years-old and the maximum age that can remain in the home is 24 years-old. TMH also has an onsite cottage that assists new mothers at risk of losing their infants to the state with services and education to help them get established and remain with their children. Explanation of How Engagement Occurs in My Field ExperienceEngagement in my field experience occurs when children first arrive at TMH, but continues on throughout their interaction with different agency members. I engage with the children when I am able to participate in their monthly well and safety meetings. Once a month, or more when needed, the children meet with an agency staff member to discuss their successes and areas of opportunity. When I am able to participate I get the experience of engaging with the clients. In addition, I teach a psych-ed class two times a week for an hour that allows me to engage with the youth with open dialogue and interactions, which I thoroughly enjoy.
