Folklore represents one of the oldest ways of looking at society and its perceptions. From the
fairy tales that have survived generations of time through narration, one can piece together a
clear picture of gender roles in ancient societies. The discussion in this paper will look at how
three stories paint the image of gender roles in society before modernity. The common strand
between all the three stories is the fact that they occurred during the times of feudal England. As
such, the relationships that the characters have with each other can only be said to be reflective
