Hurricane Irma broke the record as the most powerful hurricane in the Atlantic in
September 6, 2017. Its winds travelled 185 M/hr for 37 hours. The death toll recorded 102
people, about 90% of the buildings in Barbuda were damaged leaving 60% population homeless
while all communication in the affected area was destroyed (Rabin, 2017). St. Thomas on
Virginia Islands among those affected reporting 33 deaths, homes, Farms and infrastructure
damaged (Funes, 2017). Two weeks later hurricane Maria hit drowning what Irma had left. The
Island is yet to fully recover with many of its population still traumatized, homeless and in
despair. The paper will describe the “Redeeming St Thomas” humanitarian project to serve the
homeless population as a result of the hurricane with counseling and clinical services.
