1. What do you think about the civil rights of mentally ill patients?
I believe that the civil rights of mentally ill patients are straight forward and laid out
clearly. For example, there are a few rights that allow the patient to accept or refuse treatment
if the patient is capable of making treatment decisions ("Mental Health Declaration of Human
Rights", 2018). Other rights include, making informed decisions about their treatment, leave
the hospital if the patients is there voluntarily, get information on why you are being held in the
hospital if you are a voluntarily a patient, privacy and confidentiality with your illness and
treatment ("Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights", 2018). These are just a few of the
main civil rights of mentally ill patients.
However, there are several other civil rights for mentally ill patients that go more in

facility ("Mental Health Declaration of Human Rights", 2018). Some of these rights include, the
right to a fully equipped medical facility with well-trained medical staff, treatment without any
discrimination of the patient’s race, sex, language, religion, or political opinion ("Mental Health
Declaration of Human Rights", 2018). Patients also have the right to legal action if the hospital
or facility is forcing you for specific type of treatment or if you are told not to...
