Part I – Rhetorical situation for a movie, the PowerPoint on Canvas, something written
for school
The audience for the movie "Murder Mystery" are people who enjoy comedy, like
investigative processes and mystery. The comedy genre's conventions include having lighthearted drama and being amusing and entertaining. In "Murder Mystery," most situations,
actions, and language are humorously exaggerated. The movie aims to entertain and teach life
lessons like being a good friend.
Students are the audience for the PowerPoint on Canvas. Teaching materials'
conventions include simplicity in diction, compelling questions to trigger critical thinking,
visual language, and proper arrangement of materials supporting clarity. The PowerPoint on
Canvas aims to be a helpful learning material
The audience for my sample writing was my professor. Academic writing's
conventions include objectivity, precision, balance, formality, and responsibility. The
professor's expectations were a well-written essay on "writing concepts," which included
ensuring I avoided plagiarism and used correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The
purpose of academic papers is to showcase what concepts one learns and to sharpen one's
critical thinking and analytical skills.
The research essay aims to help develop a deeper understanding of the learned
materials through synthesizing materials related to the topic. Broader analysis helps see the
connection between what is learned in class and practical application. Besides, writing
research essays builds research skills. A research essay can add to knowledge.

The other concept of writing identified from the rhetorical situation the research essay
links to is settings. Settings refer to the time and place that surrounds communication. The
school environment is formal, controlled, and professional, which impacts the tone of one's
writing. My research essay must remain formal and professional, even when it involves
personal reflection or sharing one's thoughts.
Project 1 emphasized the concept of audience and how it impacts how we write.
Writing with an audience in mind impacts the topic, tone, diction, and several other elements.
Understanding rhetorical situation helps choose appropriate topics for contexts and the right
tone for the audience.

My major is Business Analytics info, and my search led me to resources about
business intelligence and analytics. The Grand View University page on business analytics
targets people interested in pursuing this field as a major. The information may also target
guardians and parents advising their children on colleges and universities. The
communication aims to market this university's business analytics program as the best among
all other options. The webpage falls in the educational website genre. This genre is
appropriate for the university to communicate information that can help in college selection
by sharing its academic profile. This webpage also has the concept of context as it discusses
higher education and the value it adds to one's skills and knowledgeability.
I found an article in a peer-reviewed journal by Parks & Thambusamy (2017). The
audience is scholars in the field of business analytics. The purpose is to inform and shape
business analytics theories. It also aims to lead to practical implementations in this field. The
paper falls in the academic writing genre. Its tone, diction, arrangement and topic intend to

share the authors' insights on business analytics with other scholars. This publication reflects
the writing concept of peer review. The authors share other peoples' ideas in their literature
review. They also offer constructive criticism and propose informative suggestions on areas
they disagree with.
Knowledge of different writing contexts helps me decipher the reliability of the
information provided. For instance, I can differentiate between freewriting, personal
opinions, a marketing gimmick and a severe issue calling for more attention and focus.
The diction on the webpage is simple and seeks to persuade potential students to pick
Grand View University. The published paper uses vocabulary about business analytics. It is
also arranged systematically, starting with an abstract, an introduction, a body and a
conclusion. The webpage has subsections tackling different topics a potential student in a
business analytics major may want to clarify. The audiences and the genres are similar as
they are academic scholars. While the publication seeks to inform and add to the field's
knowledge, the website aims to attract and inform.
