Description

Immigrant Vietnamese women in Australia and other parts of the world have high rates of cervical cancer. The Pap (Papanicolau) Smear Test is a screening procedure to identify incipient cervical cancer.

Your Task:

Please read the following articles/abstracts and then formulate a discussion, 6+ pages, on what are the best ways to promote pap smears, other screening procedures, and health in this group. Also, comment on communication issues that have to be taken into consideration when delivering a health message to Vietnamese women. You can also use the knowledge on cultural competence you acquired in Module 1.

Promoting Cervical Cancer Screening on Vietnamese Women
The Vietnamese living in Australia is a relatively small and young immigrant
community. They arrived in the country after the fall of Vietnam in the year 1975. It is important
to note that the fourth largest non-English speaking immigrant communities in Australia are the
individuals of the Vietnamese origins. Statistical facts pose it that the women born in Vietnam
have the highest incidences of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is also a prevalent condition
among the Vietnamese immigrant women in other countries like the United States of America. It
is sad that their participation in the Pap smear tests is considerably lower than expected. The
Papanicolaou Test is one of the screening procedures that is used to identify the developing
cervical cancer. The paper is a cognitive overview of the best available ways of promoting Pap
smear tests on the Vietnamese immigrant women. The article also comments on the
communication issues that have to get employed while passing the health message to the health
group.
Incidence of Cervical Cancer
The Vietnamese-Americana face the most significant health disparity having the highest
cases of cervical cancer as compared to their Caucasian whites. This minority health group has
43 cases per 100,000 sample population as compared to a national average of 8.7 cases per
100,000 sampled population. Also, the Vietnamese immigrant women in the United States of
America have a ten times higher prevalence rate of cervical cancer as compared to the Native
Americans. Statistical facts have it that for the same ages, there are 181.6 cases per 100,000
sampled population for the Vietnamese women against 17.8 cases for the white women (Do et al.
2007).
