characteristics. This form of classification results into the formation of regions. These regions are
usually defined in terms of both physical and human characteristics. There are three types of
regions; formal regions, vernacular regions and functional regions (Stern et al. 78). Formal
regions are regions that have been characterized politically. This means that these regions have
been divided according to political affiliations beliefs and practices. A formal region is defined
by culture or practices or in most cases by the presence of a government (Stern et al. 78). When a
formal region shares not only common political and cultural practices, but also physical
characteristics, it is referred to as a uniform region. Examples of formal regions include
countries, states and cities. Functional regions are classified and identified according to the
