SIM - 03 Country Political Geography

About

SIM – Country Political Geography is an Assignment where you unpack the term political geography and compare the geographies of three countries.

Estimated Time

An estimated 90 minutes is needed to complete this activity.

What is geography?

According to the CIA World FactbookLinks to an external site., geography “includes the entries dealing with the natural environment and the effects of human activity.” Next is a list of these entries:

  1. Location
  2. Geographic coordinates
  3. Map references
  4. Area
  5. Land boundaries
  6. Coastline
  7. Maritime claims
  8. Climate
  9. Terrain
  10. Elevation
  11. Natural resources
  12. Land use
  13. Irrigated land
  14. Population distribution
  15. Natural hazards
  16. Environment – current issues
  17. Environment – international agreements

What is Political Geography?

According to WikipediaLinks to an external site., “Political geography is concerned with the study of both the spatially uneven outcomes of political processes and the ways in which political processes are themselves affected by spatial structures. Conventionally, for the purposes of analysis, political geography adopts a three-scale structure with the study of the state at the center, the study of international relations (or geopolitics) above it, and the study of localities below it. The primary concerns of the subdiscipline can be summarized as the inter-relationships between people, state, and territory.”

Why is geography and political geography important for Comparative Politics?

Geography and political geography are important for comparative politics for at least three reasons.

First, geography influences government, and government influences geography. The endogenous, or reciprocal, relationship between government and geography means political institutions, political processes, and behaviors of political actors are shaped by the geography of their country, and the geography of the region in which the country resides.

For example, Ethiopia is an east African country with no history of European colonization. The headwaters (start of a river system) of the Blue Nile River are in Ethiopia. The Blue Nile River merges with the White Nile River and thereby creating the Nile River. The country is nearing completion and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance DamLinks to an external site.on the Blue Nile River. The need for electrical energy, and a stable water resource, has shaped the domestic politics of Ethiopia for generations. Now, with the dam project coming to fruition, politics in the country is changing, and the relationships Ethiopia has with its neighboring, and downstream, countries like Sudan and Egypt are changing as well.

Figure 1: Map of north east Africa and the Nile River system

Second, political geography helps us see the international, national, and subnational levels and interactions that countries are at the center of. For students who have completed an Introduction to International Relations course, the concepts of international politics, domestic politics, and subnational politics, are intertwined with the geography of a country and its neighbors. Thus, political geography requires us to think about how these different levels interact with geography itself.

Third, comparative politics is about comparing a country with itself, or comparing two or more countries with each other. An often overlooked, yet meaningful dimension, is geography. When we seriously consider geography, we begin to make comparisons not just between governments, or economies, or societies, but the more general influences geography has on these aspects of countries.

The broader concept is called environmental determinism. According to WikipediaLinks to an external site., “Environmental determinism (also known as climatic determinism or geographical determinism) is the study of how the physical environment predisposes societies and states towards particular development trajectories. Many scholars underscore that this approach supported colonialism and eurocentrism and devalued human agency in non-Western societies. Jared Diamond, Jeffrey Herbst, Ian Morris, and other social scientists sparked a revival of the theory during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. This "neo-environmental determinism" school of thought examines how geographic and ecological forces influence state-building, economic development, and institutions.”

Instructions

Step 1: Select two countries, which are different from the prior “Government” assignment, to learn about their “geography”

Step 2: Review the One Page Summary for the United StatesLinks to an external site.

Step 3: Explain each of the following comparisons in 3 or more sentences

  • Compare geography of country 1 to the United States
  • Compare geography of country 2 to the United States
  • Compare geography of country 1 to country 2

Step 4: Make a list of the four different countries you have compared so far

  • At this point, your list should have 4 countries total

Part One
The video I used for this part is titled “The Japan You Never Knew”, which follows Katie’s
trip in the more rural and tradition Prefecture of Ehime. Ozu City has a lot of historical buildings,
and due to the decrease in population, a lot of the vacant houses have been repurposed into hotels
with the help of local businessowners. Because of this, the city’s revitalization project has been
nominated for the Green Destination Top 100 sustainable destinations in the world.
There’s a castle in Ozu City where the ancient lords would live, which has been
reconstructed “perfectly” (the interior and the exterior are exactly the same as they were in the
castle’s original form) with the financial contributions of the local people and is now a tourist
destination where guests are allowed to sleep. Katie then visits a restaurant with locally sourced
food where the tourists can fish the koi fish they will eat from a small pond.

Part Two
I watched Global Conflict Cooperation during week 3 of Fall 2021 regarding El Salvador.
What did you find perplexing or challenging about the workshop topic?
● Understanding the idea that there are still longlasting effects to conflict even after
agreements have been pacted or peace has been “achieved” may explain Nayib
Bukele’s high popularity despite human rights violations.
● Bukele’s attacks on judicial autonomy can legitimize a government with
authoritarian characteristics, keeping in mind that he also seeks to remove

2

presidential limit terms and seek reelection, which is unconstitutional in El
Salvador.
● Given Bukele’s overwhelming popularity, what are the geopolitical implications in
the region given some of his most recent decisions, such as moving from the US
Dollar to Bitcoin? Is his popularity going to trigger a blue tide in Latin America as
described by Pablo Stefanoni?
● It’s difficult yet interesting to see how El Salvador’s political context develops as
the political institutions have historically represented a source of distrust and
corruption, which only propelled the legitimization and acceptance of an antiestablishment populist figure such as Bukele. If the ruling party controls around
two thirds of the Legislative Assembly and the judicial branch has also been tilted
in a pro-Bukele direction, then what can be expected in terms of democracy and
further violations of human rights and press freedom?

Part Three
The two countries that were selected are Ghana and Nicaragua:

Comparing Ghana with the United States, we can see that both countries are very rich in
natural resources such as gold, bauxite, and petroleum. Ghana is smaller than the United States,
but it is not a really small country either: its total totals around 235,000 squared kilometers. Both
countries are also similar in the sense that they border with few other countries; in the case of the

3

United States only with Canada and Mexico, whereas with Ghana it borders with Ivory Coast,
Burkina Faso, and Togo. Both countries have access to the sea. Mount Afadja is the highest point
in Ghana with 885 meters of altitude compared to the United States with Mount Denali in Alaska
with 6,190 meters of altitude.

Comparing Nicaragua to the United States, Nicaragua is a much smaller country than
United States and it’s located in Central America, bordering with Costa Rica on the south and
Honduras on the north. Nicaragua’s total area adds up to around 130,000 squared kilometers.
Nicaragua is also rich, like the United States, in natural resources such as gold, silver, and copper.
It also has access to both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, as well as the biggest lake in
Central America which has allowed for discussions on building a canal in Nicaragua.

Comparing Nicaragua to Ghana, Nicaragua is approximately half the size in total area of
Ghana. Both countries are very rich in natural resources. Both countries are also unicameral
presidential republics. Both countries also have an ethnically and culturally diverse population.
