Everyday Cybercrime Video
James Lyne, a cybersecurity expert, discusses how hackers gain access to individuals and
organization’s computer systems using means such as USB sticks and insecure websites. I
completely agree with Lyne’s claim that insecure websites are contributing a lot to the spread of
malware around the world (Ted, 2013). I also completely agree with his assertion that sharing
sensitive information online helps hackers gain access to one’s computer system (Ted, 2013). It
is very important to ensure that one properly evaluates the information that they share to ensure
that they do not fall prey to hack or malware attacks.
Lyne also mentions that one of the biggest challenges facing the cybersecurity
community is the fact that governments around the world fail to agree on how to cooperate in
prosecuting cybercriminals (Ted, 2013). This is very true. Countries such as Russia have failed
to prosecute or even extradite cybercriminals that have hacked individuals and organizations
(Ted, 2013). This lack of cooperation enables the continued thriving of cybercriminals around
the world. If governments would cooperate in bringing to book their citizens who have engaged
in international cybercrime, the problem would be minimized. Rivalry between different
countries is hinders cooperation in this area.
